“What is Program Management?” - Gene H. Lee
Introduction:
Program management is a strategic management method for carrying out and overseeing several connected initiatives. By pooling project resources, expenditures, and other project operations, program management aims to provide advantages to the entire program.
When linked projects are managed concurrently, synergies that would be difficult to achieve if each project were managed independently can be achieved. However, given that program management has a broader emphasis than managing a single project, this demands more complicated management.
Consequently, program management is a process that emphasizes the macro over the micro, which comprises:
Monitoring programs and carrying out routine management and reporting tasks
Facilitating the creation and execution of each program's budget, program governance, and program management plan
Managing resources and stakeholder communications across all initiatives
Ensuring that the program's overarching goals and benefits are met by the project deliverables from the program plan
Coordinating the project interdependencies with the program documentation to keep everyone on the same page
Obtaining approvals on in/formal operating agreements from all key stakeholders including project resource owners/managers
Within the program management process, there are several responsibilities and acronyms. Of course, it's possible that you won't employ all these roles and duties when creating a new program management process for your company, but it's still crucial to understand what each one entails and how it contributes to the program.
It takes various skills to succeed in the complex field of program administration, including technical proficiency, client focus, leadership, and stakeholder management. Working as a project manager and gaining expertise in project management frameworks is a reasonably frequent route to becoming a program manager.
Most hiring managers like to work with program managers with at least three to five years of project management expertise. You'll need expertise in leading large-scale projects with cross-functional teams if you want to be considered for essential programs.
Feel free to contact me and I look forward to learning about your program management needs.
